I don't want to come off as a grump so I'll mention again that the performance was really, really good. Then it was a long walk to the third location where there was even less room.
Dublin music pub crawl rick steves full#
The fix must have been in because once we climbed to the second floor private room it was already 2/3rd's full of Pub Crawl patrons who somehow already knew to skip Gogarty's and go directly to Ha'Penny Bridge Pub. Also, it was billed as a 3 pub crawl but the first location (Gogarty's) was packed out so we just picked up and moved to stop #2. Chairs/seating were not available for everyone and it was difficult to see the performers. However, this event was clearly oversold. Anyway, the musical experience was perfect and a great bargain at 12 euro. This was a Saturday night so I think these two guys are the A team. Know what to expect.Booked this a month in advance of our September 2014 Dublin visit. Our friends did purchase, and said it is excellent. We felt no pressure whatsoever to buy a CD, and didn't. Contrary to one of the negative reviews, no one "pushed" their CDs on us. There's no way to know in advance how this will turn out, but we were very lucky. The "noble call" where members of the audience are asked to sing was excellent.

If a good Irish pub is one that makes you feel like you are in someone’s home, these pubs were good. We enjoyed the sights walking through the neighborhood on our way to the Ha'Penny Bridge Inn & Branagan's. You can see the 20 bags sitting by the exit door to know which exit. It happened to be "the first 20 ladies" that were near the exit by the bar as we were leaving to go on our pub crawl. As we left, Gogarty's gave out bags with very nice hats to "the first 20 ladies," but they also gave a couple to some men that asked. Our two musicians met us at Gogarty's, but did not play any music there. Both soups were very good, but the seafood soup was especially delicious (better than New England clam chowder, and worth eating again if given an opportunity). Food is a bit expensive, and we weren't that hungry, so we all simply had soup. Those paying that night that were also getting the Rick Steves discount simply paid the discounted price. We registered online in advance and there was no place online to get the Rick Steves 1 Euro discount, so after the organizer collected money from other participants, she gave us cash. John Gogarty can take some time for the organizer to collect money from everyone, so you may want to arrive early and get a table and some drinks to avoid having to stand around while waiting for them to get started. To convene, go to the 1st floor, not the ground floor. Our friends said it was one of the highlights of our England/Scotland/Ireland trip. Rather than summarily dismissing it based on a few bad reviews, we're glad we went. We read about the pub crawl in a Rick Steves travel guide, then checked the TripAdvisor reviews, good and bad. On the other hand, if you would like an evening with two fine musicians and others interested in learning about acoustic Irish music while enjoying a pint or two for the evening, you won't be disappointed. If you're expecting rowdy pubs, drinking, different bands, loud music and a party atmosphere, you'll be disappointed. With TripAdvisor showing over a hundred excellent reviews, you might simply assume everything will be up to your expectations, but with only a few poor and terrible reviews for this Musical Pub Crawl, it's good to read those reviews, too, so you can know what to expect. A very good or excellent experience as opposed to a poor or terrible one is largely a matter of your expectations.
